  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 1 medium carrot, finely diced
  • 2 celery stalks, finely diced
  • 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef
  • ½ cup (100 ml) dry red wine
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 2 cans (14 oz / 400 g each) crushed tomatoes
  • lb (900 g) gnocchi
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add onion, carrot, and celery; cook until softened (8–10 minutes).
  2. Stir in garlic and ground beef; cook until browned (5–6 minutes).
  3. Pour in red wine; simmer for 1–2 minutes.
  4. Add tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, salt, and pepper; bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, cook gnocchi according to package directions; drain.
  6. Combine cooked gnocchi with the sauce, add fresh basil if desired.
  7. Serve hot with grated Parmesan on top.
